The Lost Link

Brilanya lay in the cage where Doridien had chained her. She could still feel the power of the storm settling around the city. They were all dead and gone. No one was left to keep the promise.

If only they had not taken her from Tersia, but such thoughts only filled her with bitterness. Tersia could have saved them all, but it was not to be.

The young dragon felt her heart swell and break with sorrow. It burst in her small chest, leaving behind a hollow empty space. Her heart blood rose to gush from her droop lidded eyes. She tried to blink back the deathtears, but realized there was nothing to live for, no reason to stop them at all. Crimson drops fell as hard as rubies to the floor.

She waited for death to follow, but it stayed distant. She shivered. It was a dragon's doom to only cry once and then die. The dragons were immortal, but if the burden of life became too great and broke their hearts, they could weep tears of heartblood and find release. But Brilanya lived, the hardened blood of her heart winking with a fiery light all around her.

Realization crept cold and heartless into her mind.
Anger and hatred filled the emptiness of her heaving breast.

Damn them. Damn them. We cannot live. We must not live on without a heart.

Sharp sparkling diamonds dripped from her eyes, chipped from the icy core of which formed in the place of her heart. She thought of the warm salty tears she nearly tasted and choked out a spray of glittering emeralds of envy. Laughing bitterly, cool dark sapphires tinkling to the floor from her eyes.

The irony, the justice of it all.

They will now covet our tears as once we yearned for theirs.

Now, Brilanya of the dragon blood, imprisoned by immortality, lay in the deep places of Calasithdia bereft of her heart and she wept her hatred, anger, bitterness, envy, and loneliness far beneath the sands of the desert plain.
